Islands of Inspiration

View of St. Vincent and the Grenadines from Park Hill

St. Vincent and the Grenadines is a place near and dear to my heart. It’s the birthplace of my mother—the woman who inspired our Giving Back campaign. Though I’m the only child of my mom who was not born there, the island culture has always been a big part of my life and has always influenced me significantly. The island country is very small and not many people know it, but you may have heard of St. Vincent recently, as it was in the news for the eruption of La Soufrière volcano, which started in 2020 and continued into 2021. The island and its citizens are continuing to restore itself after the damage caused by the eruption. If you ever get to visit—and I highly recommend you do—you’ll see that St. Vincent is one of the most beautiful places on earth.

I’m well overdue for a trip to St. Vincent, but during my last stay, I had the chance to do a New Year’s Eve hike up La Soufrière with some family and friends. It was cold and foggy up at 4,000’, compared to the hot and sunny weather we left down below. Local geologist, Professor Richard Robertson, gave us a careful and highly informative guide up to the top. What an incredible day!

When I’m not hiking dormant volcanos, you can definitely find me on the beach in St. Vincent. My two favorite places to take in the sun and the clear blue waters are Young Island and Bequia.

Did you know that the inspiration for many of the products in our shop comes from St. Vincent and the Grenadines? You’ll see that items will have names, color and even pattern or textural inspiration from various parts of St. Vincent’s Caribbean culture—places, foods, memories.

While I plan my next trip to St. Vincent, where I’ll get to see family I haven’t seen in some time and have some new, exciting adventures, I’ll continue using the beauty of the country to inspire the handmade items you’ll be able to buy in our shop, like our Bonhomme Bistro Cushion set (featured below), inspired by the Grand Bonhomme and Petit Bonhomme mountains. We picture walking through and lunching in the beautiful Montreal Gardens, while taking in the view of the mountains. This is on our to-do list for the next trip!
